The SBA’s 2026 small-business FAQ reports that small businesses created 61% of net new U.S. jobs from 1995 through 2024. That does not make every venture successful, and it should not be used to romanticize the risk founders assume. It does establish why founder capability matters to the wider economy.
An owner who learns to price correctly, build repeatable operations, and hire thoughtfully is doing more than improving personal income. That owner is creating a place where other people can do valuable work.
Local ownership strengthens local knowledge
Local operators notice specific problems because they live with them. A restaurant owner knows when a block loses foot traffic. A contractor sees where housing maintenance repeatedly fails. A childcare operator understands the scheduling decisions working families make every week.
